It was during centuries of Roman rule that plumbing systems found their way into urban settings. Both the Romans and Greeks used plumbing to provide clean water for their cities. In fact, until the nineteenth century underground piping systems overtook the Roman way of aqueducts. During ancient times, pipes were mostly made of lead and aqueducts were constructed from stone and clay. In modern times, however, this is not true. Today, plumbing and piping systems are made of steel, brass copper, plastic, and other metals. The toxicity of lead makes pipes unsuitable for use.
