A. E. Burnside was a commander in the Northern armies. Throughout the war, he wore “side-whiskers,” a style that allowed hair to grow down every facet of your face, no matter how he shaved. Following the war, a lot of yank men used this type beard to enhance their appearance. A pointed, short beard around the chin known as “vandyke” is quite common in France. However, situation beards are more typical than they are in the US. This beard was popularized by Anthony Vandyke of Holland, the great painter. He usually painted males with constrained and pointed beards.
